Abandoned and Impounded Vehicles

Vehicles left on a Public Road

Vehicles may not be left on a public road or public place in excess of 24 hours. Most vehicles left on a public road in excess of 24 hours are usually in an unroadworthy state or may have been dumped and will compromise road and public safety.

Council Officers are authorised under Sections 236 and 237 of the Local Government Act 1999 to impound vehicles that have been left on a road within the City in excess of 24 hours and are therefore deemed as abandoned. Council may tow a vehicle if a complaint is received and it is established that it has not moved for 24 hours.

Specific legislation (the Local Government Act and the Road Traffic Act) permits us to tow and impound vehicles. The owner is given notice requiring the vehicle to be moved onto private property to avoid it being impounded. Vehicles that have been impounded are held by Council until collected by the owner. Council can sell or dispose of any unclaimed vehicle.

To notify us of a vehicle that has been left in your street for extended periods of time, please phone (08) 8397 7313 during office hours.

Think your vehicle has been towed?

Contact Council on (08) 8397 7313 first for confirmation. Make sure you have the registration number of your vehicle handy.

Know your vehicle has been towed

Before you can recover your vehicle, you must come to our Civc Centre in person to prove that you are the owner of the vehicle. You must bring your registration notice and/or your driver's licence with you to prove that you are the owner of the vehicle. We will not release the vehicle to anybody acting on your behalf unless they present a written letter of authority to collect the vehicle for the owner.

You must pay the fee charged for towing, registration search fee, advertising fee and admin fee along with any storage costs incurred by Council. The vehicle will not be released until the fees are paid. We will then arrange a time for you to collect your vehicle from Pickles Auctions, 1754 Main North Road, Salisbury Plains.

Please note that storage fees for vehicles increase each day. All costs of the removal and storage will be incurred by the owner.

Council does not have any jurisdiction in regard to vehicles left abandoned on private property.
