We are committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions from our corporate operations. Green Power is environmentally-friendly electricity generated from renewable resources such as the wind and sun. Between twenty and tenty five percent of electricity used at all of Council's metered and unmetered sites is accredited Green Power, abating more than 1300 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually.
We have also invested in two solar photovoltaic systems: A 4kWh photovoltaic system on the roof of the Golden Grove Recreation & Arts Centre (saving around 5,640 kWh of energy per year) and a 4.5kWh photovoltaic system on the roof of the Library Learning Centre.

We are committed to working towards a more sustainable environment. We achieve this through reducing our resource consumption, minimising waste and greenhouse gas emissions, and protecting and improving natural areas and their biodiversity. We also strive to minimise the environmental impact of our daily operations and seek innovative ways of combining nature and technology to balance environmental, economic and social sustainability.

The Eastern Region Alliance (ERA) is a co-operative of metropolitan councils working together to benefit their local communities and the eastern region community as a whole. Many environmental projects are successfully completed on this partnership basis.
The ERA Council members are:
We are currently preparing a Climate Change Action Plan. The Plan will outline how we can mitigate the effects of climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions from its operations. The Plan will also provide guidance on how we can adapt to the effects of climate change through the development of policies and strategies, community facilities and programmes.
For many years, energy efficiency activities have been undertaken at Council's buildings. These include, but are not limited to, the use of accredited green power, lighting retrofits, swapping CRT monitors for LCD screens and the use of 'polar oil' air conditioning additive. We have recently audited its major energy consuming sites and are prioritising a list of actions which will aim to reduce energy use at these sites.
The revegetation of the City's public open space is expanding with over 10,000 local indigenous trees, shrubs and grasses planted last year; a significant increase on 2009 figures. Council's objectives for revegetation are habitat creation, amenity and conservation, and an active awareness of its contribution to mitigating climate change.
