The Field Naturalists Society is South Australia's first conservation group, founded in 1883 and incorporated in 1959. The Friends of Parks Scheme began in South Australia in 1981. Today, there are approximately 100 Friends groups across the state. Friends groups assist in revegetation and weed control information, guiding on walking trails, environmental education, clerical and office duties, signage, brochures and displays, wildlife and flora research and monitoring, restoring, maintaining and presenting heritage sites within parks to the public.
