Birds

Council does not specifically limit the number of birds (parrots etc.) and poultry (chickens, ducks etc.) a resident may keep, as long as they meet general health and hygiene standards and the birds do not become a nuisance to neighbours, eg by excessive noise or smell. Birds not recommended for keeping in or adjacent to residential areas are roosters, peacocks, galahs, sulphur-crested cockatoos, ducks and corellas.

Any complaints in regards to birds causing a nuisance such as vermin, noise, smell etc. can be made to our Inspection Team.

A permits from National Parks & Wildlife Service is required to keep finches.

In South Australia, Australian Magpies are a protected species under the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972.

Racing Pigeons - up to 40 pairs
Other Pigeons - up to 20 pairs

Includes fowls, ducks, geese, pheasants and turkeys of either sex over the age of four weeks. Up to 12 head, hens only.

Roosters are not recommended to be kept in residential areas.
