If you have lost your dog you should notify us immediately. You will need to provide your name/address, phone numbers, description of dog and registration details and time and place the dog went missing. It is also a good idea to report your missing dog to surrounding Councils and the Animal Welfare League of South Australia.
We receive a significant number of calls each year concerning stray dogs.
Where possible Council's Dog Management Officers capture and keep the animals at our dog pound and endeavour to return them to their owners as soon as possible.
The dog pound is a solid brick, air conditioned building located at Council's Depot Complex. On arrival at the pound all dogs are scanned for a microchip, photographed, visually checked for an injury and if necessary taken to the vet. The dogs held at the pound are fed daily and have fresh water continuously supplied through float activated water bowls. Puppies are provided with toys to play with and older dogs are kept comfortable on suspended beds and given blankets during winter. A radio is used to provide noise companionship.
Details of all impounded animals are included in a daily register on display at the Council Civic Centre.
Where dogs are reunited with their owners appropriate fees/fines are imposed as necessary and advice given so as to minimize any reoccurrence. We keep lost dogs for a minimum period of three (3) days prior to forwarding them to the Animal Welfare League for re-housing.
