Volunteer Roles

Introduction

Community Bus

Community Bus Drivers require a bus or heavy vehicle licence to drive one of three Council vehicles on the fixed route and for charter hire services. Drivers assist passengers with shopping bags and walkers.

Community Centres

There are four community centres across the City of Tea Tree Gully: Greenwith, Jubilee (Wynn Vale), Holden Hill and Surrey Downs. The Community Centres run a range of programs and activities. Opportunities may include facilitating craft groups, cooking classes, children’s groups, computer tutoring, training and administration.

Dog Obedience

Assist in the delivery of Council’s Dog Obedience program at Ashley Reserve, Ridgehaven on Wednesday evenings.  The position is essentially customer service focussed with a significant amount of interaction with participants and their dogs. 
No prior experience necessary. Training is provided for all new volunteers. A love of dogs and basic understanding of dog behaviour is desirable. 

Environment and Conservation

Friends of Kingfisher Reserve group are located at Dry Creek, Modbury North and Dalaston Reserve Modbury, activities are usually on week days.
 
Typical environmental activities include seasonal native plantings, weed control, general clean up and pruning.  Volunteers learn about local native plants and benefit by socialising and getting outdoors and experiencing our lovely reserves.
 
Council provides materials and training as required. We aim to reinstate wildlife corridors and habitat, creating peaceful places for residents to enjoy.

Graffiti Removal

Assist with the removal of graffiti in our City to maintain a graffiti free environment. Council provides protective clothing and training in the use of the Council vehicle, equipment and materials.

Golden Grove Arts Centre Events

Assist in front of house duties during performances.

Duties include checking tickets and directing patrons to their seats, reporting any customer or health and safety issues, assisting with serving of refreshments, cleaning up and assisting in evacuation procedures.

Event volunteers are rostered according to the program of events and volunteer availability. Volunteers are generally based inside the theatre during the performances so they are able to watch the show!

HACC Aboriginal Social Program Drivers

Provide transport (including driving the bus), assist clients on outings and assist with preparing meals at the Holden Hill Community Centre. 

HACC Carer Support

Assist with transport and room setup for centre based activities. Assist with operational duties of the program to encourage client choice and participation.

HACC Centre Based Support Program

Assist paid contractors to provide a social outlet for aged, younger disability and dementia clients from Monday to Saturday.
Home & Community Care (HACC) provides centre based activities and some outings to HACC eligible clients.  Volunteers provide transport using either Council vehicles or their own vehicle.

HACC Door to Door Shopping Bus Service

A bus or heavy vehicle licence is required to drive Council's bus on the Door to Door Shopping Service. 
Drivers also assist passengers with folding walkers and carrying shopping bags to residents door.

HACC Shopping and Medical

Provide transport for Home and Community Care (HACC) eligible clients using own vehicle for individual shopping and transport to medical appointments.
Must have current driver's licence, reliable vehicle and comprehensive car insurance.  Mileage reimbursement is provided.

HIVE

Assist in the running of programs, activities and events at HIVE. The position is essentially customer service focussed with a significant amount of interaction with HIVE patrons, service providers and walk in inquiries.

HIVE – Artist in Residence

Over a minimum period of 8 months the Artist in Residence will develop a body of work which will culminate in a solo exhibition at the HIVE Gallery.
During the term of the residency, the volunteer will be provided with various opportunities for growth and development within the arts and will be supported by Council staff to achieve these outcomes.

HIVE – Literacy Mentor

The Volunteer Mentor will provide one-on-one literacy mentoring and referral for Flexible Learning Options (FLO) students to improve their opportunities for further study or employment.
Mentoring is provided to students for three hours per week at HIVE, Youth Training & Development Centre, Modbury.

Justice of the Peace

Assist members of the community by administering oaths, witness and attest statutory documentation.
Must be an appointed Justice of the Peace for the State of South Australia and have a clear understanding of the Attorney General's Justice of the Peace Handbook.

Library Access Services (LAS)

Assist staff in the delivery of a range of Library materials to home service clients. Transport is provided by Council’s Community Van or private transport. Mileage reimbursement is provided. 
Clients are often vulnerable, therefore patience and flexibility are essential.

Library Digital Hub Program

Have the knack for technology and great people skills?
Join our Digital Hub Volunteer team and have the opportunity to help more people use and understand the wonderful world of technology. We are looking for volunteers to assist in small classes as well as one on one sessions.

Library Early Learning

Deliver Early Learning Programs in the Library, including reading stories, singing, setting up and clean up.
Engage with children and their parents or caregivers in a meaningful, professional and enthusiastic manner. Formal qualifications not required, full training provided. 

Library English Literacy Tutoring

Assist adults needing support with literacy skills in small groups or on a one-on-one basis in the library.  Groups and individuals requesting help are usually new migrants, ESL students or anyone requiring skills and confidence with their reading and writing.  Previous experience or knowledge of working with individuals or groups to improve literacy is desirable.

Library - Local History

Assist in the research and promotion and maintenance of the Local and Family History resources, programs and services. This role has a strong customer service focus and volunteers will be directly working with customers. An interest in history is essential and experience using Ancestry and other historical research methods is desirable.

Library Shelving Program

Understanding of contemporary library shelving arrangements and attention to detail is desirable. Full training is provided. Library collection items are shelved 7 days a week.

Library Technical Services Processing

Assist the Technical Services team in the processing of new items from various Library collections including adult fiction, audio visual materials and large print. Previous experience or training in technical services is desirable but not required. Training is provided.

Road and Cycle Safety Centre

Assist in the running of road safety education programs, activities and events held at the centre including school holiday programs, birthday parties and school programs.
A significant amount of safe cycle instruction and interaction with children aged 5-12 years.

Toy Library

Sign up new members, check returned items and process new additions to collection. Assist members with loans and returns and ensure that the collection is clean and maintained.
Computer skills are desirable but not essential. This position has a strong customer focus aspect.
