Animals

Councils perform a range of functions relating to the management and responsible keeping of domestic pets.

Legislation helps us regulate matters such as:

  • the keeping of domestic animals on private property (including dogs and cats)
  • the control of domestic animals in public places
  • nuisances and dangers posed by domestic animals.

Council is responsible for assisting our community with the responsible management of injured or deceased animals.

Council removes deceased animals from Council properties, roads, footpaths and reserves. A Council officer will endeavour to collect the animal within 3 hours of notification, 7 days a week. Following collection, and when it is possible to identify the animal (through collars, tags and/or microchips) Council will attempt to advise the owner of the animal's demise.

The collection and disposal of animals from private property is the responsibility of the property owner.
