European Wasps

Introduction

Council offers a service to destroy European Wasp nests on private and commercial properties.

Identifying the location of European Wasp nests is the responsibility of the landowner. Actual nests are not normally easily seen - signs of a nest might include numerous wasps flying in and out of:

  • a hole in the ground or retaining wall
  • vents in the outside of your house
  • hollows of trees
  • eaves of houses.

Do not attempt to dislodge a wasp nest. A wasp's sting results in fiery pain and red swelling, an ice pack may help soothe stings. Poisons Information Centre.

Tracking European wasps

European wasps have very direct flight patterns between their nest and food. They can fly up to 500 meters from the nest in search of food and fly directly back to the nest once food has been obtained.

  1. Put out food sources, such as kangaroo meat, for wasps to collect
  2. Place food in a safe place (away from children and pets) for easy observation
  3. Watch the direction wasps fly to trace their nest
  4. Once the location of the nest has been identified, contact  the European Wasp Hotline on 1800 150 080.

Discourage wasps from your property by:

  • Having no fallen fruit or food scraps lying around your yard
  • Avoiding leaving uneaten pet food or dog bones outside
  • Sealing rubbish bins
  • Covering compost at all times
  • Covering fishponds and birdbaths with fine mesh or shadecloth
  • Covering your swimming pool when not in use
  • Covering exposed food at picnics.

Note: When eating outdoors use caution when drinking out of cans or bottles as wasps may enter the containers, use clear containers or a straw.
