Enrol to vote

Voting in council elections is open to a broader range of people than State and Federal elections, including non-Australian citizens, non-resident landlords and businesses.

The voters’ roll for council elections consists of two components - the House of Assembly (State) roll, and Council's supplementary roll.

House of Assembly (State) roll

If you are a resident on the House of Assembly Roll, you will automatically be registered to vote.

If you have recently turned 18 or changed your residential or postal address or name, you must complete an electoral enrolment form, which is available from the Electoral Commission SA or a post office.

Council's supplementary roll (closes 29 July 2022)

If you are not enrolled on the House of Assembly roll you may be eligible to register on Council's supplementary roll, if:

  • You have been a resident at your current address for one month and are not on the State Electoral Roll
  • You are a sole owner or occupier of rateable property in the City of Tea Tree Gully area
  • You are not an Australian citizen but you have been a resident at your current address in the City of Tea Tree Gully area for one month
  • You are a landlord for a rateable property in the City of Tea Tree Gully area
  • You are an organisation or business owner or occupier of rateable property in the City of Tea Tree Gully area
  • You are a group of owners or occupiers of rateable property in the City of Tea Tree Gully area

To register on the Council supplementary roll, you will need to complete the relevant form, see below, which must be witnessed and returned to Council by 5pm Friday 29 July 2022.

If you are unclear on whether you are required to enrol or re-enrol to vote, visit the Local Government Association website or contact Council on 8397 7444.

Forms to enrol to vote in the supplementary election:

  • This form should be completed where a property is owned by more than one owner (-ie a group owner) or occupied by more than one occupier/tenant (-ie a group occupier).

Nominate as a candidate

Nominations to enrol as a candidate for the 2022 Local Government Election open at 9am Tuesday 23 August 2022 and close at 12 noon Tuesday 6 September 2022.

Most people who are on the Council voters roll can stand for this election if they meet the requirements to stand for election. It is not a requirement to live or own a property in the Ward you nominate for.

Becoming a councillor provides an opportunity to influence local decisions and create long term, positive outcomes for the City and residents.

Nominations are encouraged from people from diverse backgrounds to ensure that a wide range of views are represented.

With very few exceptions (such as being an undischarged bankrupt, or being disqualified from holding office by a court order), you can nominate for a position on Council regardless of qualifications, religion, race, gender, experience or profession.

If you are invested in the future of the City of Tea Tree Gully, are willing to learn and participate, and prepared to contribute strategically to decision making processes that benefit your broader community, then you should explore what it takes to be a councillor and nominate to stand in the Council elections.

Voting in Council elections

Voting in Council elections is done by post.

If you are on the State (House of Assembly) electoral roll or have completed an enrolment to join the supplementary roll for the City of Tea Tree Gully, you will receive a voting pack in the mail in late October 2022.

The ballot paper in your voting pack will show the candidates standing for election in the Ward and a Mayoral Ballot paper.

Once you have decided who you want to vote for, complete your ballot papers and return it in the reply paid envelope.

Votes must be received before 5pm Thursday 10 November 2022.

Get involved and make a difference. Local democracy is an important feature of life in Australia, and councils have a far greater influence on communities than most people appreciate.
