Lot 50 to be transformed into an open-space reserve

The transformation of undeveloped land at Lot 50 into an open-space reserve should begin later this month.
Previously known as Willison’s Farm, Lot 50 is a one-hectare property bordering Golden Grove Road and is part of Kingfisher Reserve at Modbury Heights.
Initial works will focus on remediating the land to improve biodiversity.
“We’ll be seeding a native grassland of species that originally existed throughout the area. It will be one of the very few grassland habitats in Adelaide and will be managed differently than most of our reserves.
“We want it to be more natural – like it was before it became farmland to educate our community about grassland habitat and create a unique space for visitors,” said Andrew Burley, Horticultural Projects and Assets Officer, City of Tea Tree Gully.
Native grassland currently only exists in small remnant pockets in the Dry Creek corridor.
Stone from the remnants of an 1840s farmhouse will be a feature of landscaping to be carried out later this year. Also, to take place will be the installation of paths, a public toilet, an area of irrigated turf and planting of trees and shrubs – subject to final costs.
The overall transformation will cost $500,000, which has been fully funded through a Local Road and Community Infrastructure Program grant.
Tea Tree Gully Council purchased the property in 2006. The farmhouse was dismantled in 2012 due to restoration costs and the remnant grapevines were re-located to Baymor Reserve, Modbury and Balmoral Reserve, Dernancourt.
The scheduled works are part of the Modbury Heights Precinct Plan endorsed by Council in 2016.
The community had its say in late 2021 on the development of the property during community engagement on the Dry Creek Corridor Upgrade stage 2 community engagement.
