Memorial Drive upgrade complete

Council has completed the second stage of a streetscape makeover of Memorial Drive in Tea Tree Gully.

The scope of works for stage 2 included a complete road reconstruction, new kerbing, stormwater upgrades and DDA compliant footpaths on both sides of the street.

An avenue of 60 Pin Oak trees (Quercus palustris) were planted to replace the street’s aging pine trees. This species of tree was selected to due to its use in other Avenues of Honour in South Australia and its year-round appeal.

The project budget of $800,000 was funded by the Australian Government's Roads to Recovery Program.  

Deputy Mayor Lucas Jones said the “completion of this long-awaited project provides a safe and accessible thoroughfare for local residents and users to enjoy for many years to come.

“The restoration of this avenue is a great tribute to honouring past and present service men and women and honours the Anzac spirit,” he said.

In a future stage of the redevelopment, we will be honouring past and present Anzacs from the City of Tea Tree Gully. This may be through interpretive signage, art installations and plaques.   

This project was developed in consultation with the Tea Tree Gully RSL, heritage advisors and Avenues of Honour. Stage 1 of this project was completed in July 2021.
