Major investment continues in Modbury with Smart Road redevelopment
The ongoing transformation of Modbury is set to continue with upgrades to Smart Road to start by the end of this year.
The Smart Road investment is a continuation of the streetscape upgrade along Reservoir Road from North East Road totalling $1.5m. The second stage costing $770,000 from the Smart Road roundabout to Crozier Avenue, was completed earlier this month.
This investment is driven by the Modbury Precinct Main Road and Gateways Project which has a total expenditure of $4 million over three years until 2020.
Tea Tree Gully Council is contributing 80% of the project funding, with the remainder funded through the State Local Government Infrastructure Partnership (SLGIP). This partnership is a job stimulus program backed by the SA Government, the Local Government Association of South Australia, the Local Government Finance Authority and councils.
The vision of this substantial program of work is to transform the Modbury Precinct by 2024 into one of Adelaide’s finest places to live, meet and do business.
A tender for the Smart Road landscape, civil, drainage and irrigation works closes on 24 October 2017.
The first two stages of works on Smart Road are expected to be completed in the current financial year at an investment of close to $1.5 million.
Work will first start on the eastern end of Smart Road near the TAFE SA building by January to ensure minimal disruption to Westfield shoppers over the busy Christmas period.
The Smart Road component of the project will deliver large-scale streetscape redesigns, including upgrades to footpaths, verges, cycle lanes and median strips along Smart Road to the Smart Road/Reservoir Road roundabout.
More than 8 km of shared-use paths and a significant amount of landscaping will be carried out, including median strip tree planting.
Improved pedestrian and cycle links and green boulevards ultimately linking North East Road, Smart Road and Reservoir Road throughout the precinct will increase usability and safety for all residents and visitors to the area.
The inclusion of artwork, new signage and public seating will conclude the Smart Road portion of the Modbury Precinct Main Road and Gateways project.
The project is seen as a catalyst for delivering investment in the area from retail, health and aged care, IT sector and housing development.
Major private sector investment projects are already in the pipeline, including aged-care provider ECH’s plans to build a village at 85 Smart Road.
Local job growth is anticipated with the precinct currently supporting 6,800 jobs.
