Tea Tree Gully Library will open one hour earlier on weekdays from 1 July this year.

The decision to open at 9am on weekdays follows an independent survey of 465 library customers conducted in October 2018.

The survey results showed that while almost 100% of people interviewed found staff helpful and were satisfied with library services, about 30% found opening times a challenge.

“The new opening hours are about offering services to the community when it works for them.  On most days, from 9.30am, we have up to 40 people in the foyer waiting for the library to open,” said Helen Kwaka, Manager Library Services, Arts and Culture.

“We’ll now be able to offer our under 5s programs at better times for people who want to visit the library after dropping off older children at school or who need to leave mid-morning to put children to bed.”

The extended opening hours will not affect the Council’s budget bottom line, but will make a difference to the amount of time library staff can spend with customers.

New technology, currently being installed as part of a library refresh, will free up staff time and save costs by speeding up check-in and record-keeping processes, and reducing manual handling for staff.

From 1 July, the new opening hours will be:

  • Monday, 9am to 8pm
  • Tuesday, 9am to 5pm
  • Wednesday, 9am to 8pm
  • Thursday, 9am to 5pm
  • Friday, 9am to 5pm
  • Saturday, 10am to 5pm
  • Sunday, 1 to 5pm.

The decision to change the opening hours was made at last week’s meeting of Tea Tree Gully Council.
