River Torrens Linear Park

River Torrens Linear Park

River Torrens Linear Park is one of the most expansive and picturesque locations in City of Tea Tree Gully and is a unique natural treasure.

With over 14km of pathways, there are so many wonderful things to see and explore by foot or bike. A great start is to enter via the Promenade in Highbury, and take your time wandering along the creek line.

There are plenty of spots to picnic, relax and take in the beautiful surroundings. Amongst the rich green vegetation you can find multiple fruiting trees including walnut, pistachio, fig and mulberry. The stunning willow trees are a celebrated destination for weddings and professional photographs.

There is also an abundance of wildlife to see. The wetlands feature plenty of native fauna including birds and ducks. While koalas, kangaroos, echidnas, and lizards can also be spotted in this area. A 'bee hotel', a sanctuary for native bees, is located to the east of The Promenade.

Be sure to explore the walking trails, where you’ll find many historic sites dating back to the 1840's. Garner a new found appreciation of these significant locations and learn how the early settlers built our city.

Historical points of interest include:

  • Old quarry
  • Original orchards and market gardens still preserved today
  • Athelstone House - state heritage
  • Old mill
  • Brood family house

A recommended stop is the Old Mill, which is next to large grassed area with gazebo for a relaxed picnic lunch and game of cricket.

For teachers: Tea Tree Gully Library's Children's and Youth team run self guided school walking tours along the park. Please contact them for more information
