A crepe myrtle street tree with pink blooms

Crepe myrtles look blooming marvellous at this time of year.

If you are in the City of Tea Tree Gully, you’ll see varieties of this small deciduous tree (Lagerstroemia indica hybrids) growing in Civic Park and along Smart Road, Modbury.

They are a popular street tree choice as they are hardy, need minimal water once established and have vibrant blooms over summer, followed by autumn leaf displays.

They grow up to eight metres in height and have a spread of up to four metres.

You can plant them at any time of the year if you’re prepared to water regularly. However, it’s best to plant them from mid-autumn through to early spring.

Apply a slow-release fertiliser when planting and surround with mulch for further protection.

They grow well in full sun and in most soil conditions.

Visit your local plant nursery to find a species to suit your garden.
