Red, Yellow, and Green bins for different types of waste

Council provides every household with a red-lid general waste bin, a yellow-lid recycling bin and a green-lid food and organics bin.  

All bins supplied by Council remain the property of City of Tea Tree Gully and must stay with the home if you move.

What we provide

Each rateable property is provided with one set of bins which includes:

  • 1 x 140 litre red-lid general waste bin
  • 1 x 240 litre yellow-lid recycling bin
  • 1 x 140 litre OR 240 litre green-lid organics bin
  • 1x 8 litre Mini Muncher kitchen caddy

When

  • Bins will only be delivered once someone is living in the property.
  • The request will be processed within 5 to 7 working days and the bins left on the verge.

Vacant land

  • Owners of vacant land can request one green-lid organics bin for disposal of green waste from the site.
  • When not out for collection the bin must be secure and out of sight - as much as possible.

To request a new set of bins for a newly built property or vacant land you will need to log in to your myTeaTreeGully account. If you don't have an account you will need to create one

Additional bins

Request an additional bin

To request an additional green-lid food and organics bin, yellow-lid recycling bin or red-lid landfill bin you will need to log in to your myTeaTreeGully account. If you don't have an account you will need to create one

  • Requests can only be made by the ratepayer or owner of the property.

If you are currently renting and would like an additional bin, you will need to contact your property manager to request the bin on your behalf.

  • Fees apply for an additional red-lid landfill bin and include a one-off cost for bin hire as well as a yearly collection fee
  • No fees apply for an additional green-lid food and organics bin or yellow-lid recycling bin.
  • Expected delivery for an additional bin is 12 weeks.

Request a mini muncher kitchen caddy

Recycle food scraps and organic material using the free Mini Muncher kitchen caddy.

  • The 8 litre bench top bin will be delivered to your door, along with a roll of compostable bags.
  • Expected delivery for a Mini Muncher is eight weeks.
  • For City of Tea Tree Gully residents only.
  • Additional roles of compostable bags are available from the Civic Centre

What goes in which bin

Know what items go in which bin to help reduce the amount of waste being sent to landfill.

Red-lid general waste bin

Your red-lid general waste bin is collected weekly.

The following items can be put in this bin:

  • General household waste
  • Disposable nappies
  • Soft plastics
  • Ceramic, china and pottery
  • Styrofoam and polystyrene
  • Ovenproof glass
  • Drinking glasses
  • Clothing that cannot be donated or reused
  • Disposable and single use coffee cups

Yellow-lid recycling bin

Your yellow-lid recycling bin is collected fortnightly on the alternate week to your green-lid organics bin.

The following items can be put in this bin:

  • Paper, magazines, newspaper and junk mail
  • All types of cardboard, including egg cartons, greeting cards
  • Rigid plastic bottles and containers - rinsed and lids off
  • Paperboard juice and milk cartons - rinsed and flattened
  • Glass bottles and jars - rinsed and lids off
  • Steel and aluminium cans, foil and trays
  • Empty aerosol cans
  • Metal pots and pans
  • Plastic toys
  • Plastic and metal lids contained within a larger container made from the same material.

Green-lid organics bin

Your green organics bin is collected fortnightly on the alternate week to your yellow-lid recycling bin. 

The following items can be put in this bin:

  • All food scraps including fruit, vegetables, meat, seafood and egg shells
  • Tea bags and coffee grounds
  • Tissues, paper towel and serviettes
  • Shredded paper and cardboard
  • Pizza boxes with food stuck on
  • Nail clippings and hair
  • Pet waste - loose or wrapped in newspaper
  • Garden waste such as lawn clippings, small branches, leaves, weeds and flowers
