Functionality Open Spaces

Open Spaces -

  • Provide adequate amenities to ensure people can comfortably use the space for extended periods. These may include seating (benches, picnic tables), shade (trees, pergolas or shade structures), drinking fountains, waste bins and toilets.
  • Choose materials that are durable, low-maintenance and weather-resistant.
  • Design the space so that it can be easily maintained by staff.
  • Design the space to be functional year-round, incorporating features that adapt to different seasons. For example, use materials that won’t become slippery in the winter (such as textured paving or gravel).
