Surface treatments in streetscape design refers to pavements, roads, plazas and other walkable surfaces. They help define the character of a space, enhance user experience and improve safety, accessibility and durability.
Thoughtful use of surface treatments can guide pedestrian and vehicular movement, reduce maintenance costs and create visually engaging streetscapes.
Playgrounds are subject to the Australian Standards for soft-fall and are not covered here.
General
- Ensure surface treatments promote safety and support accessibility for all users, including those with disabilities and provide ease of movement for all mobility needs.
- Non-slip surfaces like textured concrete, exposed aggregate or brick are ideal for walkways and pedestrian areas.
- Pathways must provide a practical and safe ground surface for the public realm.
- Sidewalks, ramps and crossovers should be made from materials that are smooth and free of tripping hazards, such as even concrete or brick pavers with minimal joints.
- Raised tactile tiles or textured surfaces are critical for assisting visually impaired pedestrians, particularly at crossovers and transit stops.
