Water sensitive urban design (WSUD) is a means of using water to mimic the natural processes of retaining, filtering and infiltrating stormwater near to where it falls. It promotes the capture and use of water to support healthy vegetation in streetscapes and constrained urban areas.
Determine why and what is of significance prior to designing and commencing any works at any historic area or identified heritage place.
Involve conservation specialists early in the design process to ensure that WSUD measures are in line with best practice heritage conservation guidelines and any proposed works will comply with all relevant legal requirements.
General
- Implement WSUD while still preserving the area's historic character and significance while addressing modern environmental concerns like stormwater runoff, water conservation and ecological restoration.
- Managing stormwater in historic areas or identified heritage places requires solutions that don’t disturb significant elements of the space.
- Provide soft engineering solutions that are both functional and visually appropriate.
- Design water management systems that complement the identified values of heritage areas, ensuring that water-sensitive measures do not visually or functionally detract historic character or heritage value.
