Streetscape Wayfinding

The term wayfinding encompasses the way we navigate and spatially orientate ourselves within spaces and from place-to-place. Helping audiences find their way in an environment is achieved by a combination of strategies: Passive and Active wayfinding.

Together, active and passive elements work to make a place understandable and accessible. Effective wayfinding not only improves pedestrian safety and accessibility but also contributes to the aesthetic and cultural identity of a place.

General

  • Ensure wayfinding outcomes offer equitable and amenable outcomes for users and helps to encourage walking and cycling as viable modes of transport across the city.
  • Develop outcomes that make areas more legible and facilitates ease of movement and connectivity.
  • Ensure the integration of wayfinding into the landscape is subtle and doesn’t detract from the overall aesthetic of the streetscape.
  • Provide a uniform and predictable wayfinding experience throughout the streetscape.
  • Use natural elements like trees and plants to reinforce the path without overcrowding the space or blocking visibility.
