Streetscape Active Living

Active living is a way of life that includes physical activity as part of daily routines.  Physical activity is anything that gets you moving, makes your breathing quicker and gets your heart beating faster.

A movement network connects places and activities, allowing people and goods to reach their intended destinations and to access private land.  A good movement network is one that has an interconnected system of streets, roads and paths that accommodates pedestrians and cyclists, on-road public transport, emergency and private vehicles.

General

  • Design streets to be pedestrian and bike-friendly by providing dedicated lanes, pathways and crossings that prioritise the safety and convenience of non-motorised users.
  • Safety features, such as traffic calming, appropriate lighting and clear wayfinding, are essential for encouraging active living.
  • Integrate nature and green spaces into streetscapes to improve air quality, reduce stress and encourage outdoor activity.
  • By designing our neighbourhoods to promote walking, cycling, physical activity and public life, everyone can feel supported to be healthier and more active locally.
