Precincts Design Street Furniture

When designing for street furniture within a precinct, it's important to integrate functionality, aesthetics, sustainability and social considerations to enhance the public space. Street furniture—such as benches, bins, bike racks, planters, drink fountains, barbecues and lighting—should be designed to support the needs of the community, encourage social interaction and complement the surrounding environment.

It is a visible sign of pride in our City and a reflection of the status of the place given to its management. Some items can also assume a role of icons in the public realm.

General

  • All furniture and their installations need to adhere to universal design principles for inclusive access.
  • Furniture should be functional for its intended purpose, whether it’s sitting, resting or supporting the community’s activities.
  • Ensure materials are durable enough to withstand heavy use, varying weather conditions and vandalism.
  • Establish a consistent design language for all street furniture items in the precinct to create a sense of harmony. This includes materials, colours and shapes, so that everything works together aesthetically without being visually overwhelming.
  • Street furniture in a precinct is not just about providing practical seating or bins; it’s about creating a space that is functional, welcoming and integrates well with the surrounding environment.
  • Refer to Public Art if planning to install bespoke furniture.
