Giant pine scale detection at Silverlake Reserve
The City of Tea Tree Gully regret to inform the public of a new development in the ongoing giant pine scale situation.
The pest has now been confirmed at Silverlake Reserve, 918-924 Lower North East Road, Dernancourt, prompting immediate biosecurity measures to contain its spread.
As part of our commitment to public safety and environmental protection, access to the affected area will be restricted in accordance with relevant legislation.
Giant pine scale (Marchalina hellenica) is an invasive insect that primarily affects pine trees, weakening them by feeding on their sap. This pest can cause significant damage to tree health, and its spread is a serious biosecurity concern. Preventative measures are critical to limit its impact and prevent further infestation in surrounding areas.
To alert the community, temporary signage and bunting will be placed at Silverlake Reserve. These measures are crucial in preventing further contamination and ensuring that the area remains secure.
In September 2023, more than 180 trees were felled at Highbury’s Elliston Reserve to try and combat the spread of the destructive pest. Giant pine scale was also previously detected in Dernancourt in 2014.
Human contact is often the cause of the pest spreading, particularly on shoes, clothing and equipment. If you see or suspect giant pine scale, please report it to the Exotic Plant Pest Hotline on 1800 084 881.
The City of Tea Tree Gully are closely monitoring the situation and will provide further updates as necessary.
