Biodiversity

Biodiversity is the variety of all living things: plants, animals, tiny organisms and the environments they live in. It helps keep nature healthy and balanced, even in cities.

The City of Tea Tree Gully supports many species through our parks, creeks, gardens and bushland. A wide range of species makes ecosystems stronger and better at doing important jobs like producing oxygen, cleaning water, breaking down waste and supporting the climate.

To protect biodiversity, the City looks after natural areas and connects them to help animals move safely. There are 39 conservation reserves in the City of Tea Tree Gully with important native plants. Thirty of these are regularly cared for by biodiversity staff, specialist workers and community volunteers.

Since 2000, 39 hectares of land across 42 reserves have been replanted with native plants. This creates habitats for local wildlife like the Superb Fairy-wren.

Homeowners can also help by planting native species in their gardens. This adds to a network of green spaces that supports wildlife.

Council’s annual Get growing native plant sale offers affordable plants to help residents join in.

Everyone can play a part in protecting nature in our City.
