Waterworld Aquatic Centre in Ridgehaven is set to attract new waves of visitors after unveiling plans for a $5.5 million aquatic playground - including South Australia’s largest tipping bucket.

The City of Tea Tree Gully’s investment marks one of the biggest upgrades to the iconic attraction since it opened in 1969 and is designed to strengthen Waterworld's appeal as a destination for families across Adelaide.

Packed with bigger thrills and more ways to play, the aquatic playground will feature a 9.5 metre play tower with five kaleidoscopic slides, water cannons, waterfalls and a 900-litre tipping bucket to drench thrill-seekers.

The new attraction will complement Waterworld's existing three pools, three slides, junior splash pad and aqua run, rounding out the park's offering and creating a more immersive experience for families looking to cool off, stay active and spend the day together.

The redevelopment follows extensive community consultation undertaken as part of Waterworld's future planning, with Council endorsing a Waterworld Concept Plan in 2023. Community feedback identified family water play, children's attractions and recreation opportunities for 5 to 12-year-olds as key priorities for the site's future.

City of Tea Tree Gully General Manager Community Services, Michael Pereira, said the redevelopment would usher in a new era for one of the north-east's most enduring attractions.

"For more than 50 years, Waterworld has been part of summer for many South Australian families, and this investment ensures it continues to evolve for the next generation,” Mr Pereira said.

"We're building on everything people already know and love about Waterworld, while creating an experience that will attract visitors from right across the state.

"From South Australia's largest tipping bucket to kaleidoscopic slides and interactive water play, this new feature will create even more reasons for families to spend the day in Tea Tree Gully."

The works will be delivered by local aquatic experts Hydrilla, who were awarded the contract in conjunction with play equipment manufacturer Waterplay. The result will be a world-class aquatic playground manufactured from high-quality and durable stainless steel.

Waterworld is open as usual for bookings and walk-ins this season. The aquatic playground is scheduled for completion ahead of the 2027/28 summer season, with major works commencing in the off-season.
