Sister Cities
The City of Tea Tree Gully enjoys two sister city arrangements.
- Asakuchi, Japan since 1997
- Borodyanka established in 2023
Sister city relationships enables communities to strengthen cultural and historical connections, increase education opportunities, develop diverse economies, and collaboratively create immersive cultural experiences.
A sister city is a city or region that has a long-term agreement with another city or region to promote cultural and commercial ties. The relationship is formalised by an agreement signed by the highest elected or appointed official from both communities and regular communications and contacts between the two cities.
We aim for the sister city relationships to provide cultural value for the community, develop meaningful actions and contribute to strategic alignment.
Borodyanka, Ukraine
In a show of solidarity, the City of Tea Tree Gully signed a sister city agreement with Ukrainian town, Borodyanka in May 2023.
The agreement, the first between an Australian and Ukrainian city, aims to foster cultural exchange and support.
Located near Kyiv, Borodyanka is a suburban town with a population of about 24,000 residents who continue to endure the devastating impact of war. The Russian onslaught has left a trail of destruction, resulting in the displacement of about 3,000 residents. Borodyanka is important to Ukraine as it on the freight and logistics route to Warsaw.
Cr Jessica Hawkvelt, who brought the initiative to Council, emphasised the importance of standing with Borodyanka.
"Though our new friends may be across the world, in a modern digital world, there are many ways we can offer our friendship, support, strength and share knowledge between our two cities. I am excited to see what opportunities will come of our relationship with Borodyanka."
Asakuchi, Japan
The Sister City agreement between the City of Tea Tree Gully and the City of Asakuchi in Okayama prefecture Japan, was signed on 22 October 1997, in the interest of deepening friendship and mutual understanding between our two countries.
Over many years, Councillors have welcomed a formal delegation from Asakuchi, with the two cities celebrating 20 years of friendship in 2017.
We are proud to support a student exchange program between Modbury High School and their counterparts in Asakuchi.
In 2024 the Solandra Reserve Friendship Garden project was completed to acknowledge the sister city relationship with Asakuchi.
