Sculpture set at Banksia Park Sports Area now complete
The second and final sculpture has bounced its way over to the new development at Banksia Park Sports Area.
The sphere joins the three bounding, leaping and somersaulting gymnasts installed on the Tea Tree Gully Gymsports building in November 2025.
The high-gloss stainless steel structure, featuring triangular-folded and swirling cut-outs, represents the local tennis and netball played on the courts beside it.
Both works were co-designed by the City of Tea Tree Gully’s Project Management Office sculpture artist Claude Portelli.
“We wanted something that would combine the two, tennis and netball, and the sphere seemed the appropriate thing,” Mr Portelli said.
Council’s Public Art Officer Carly Didcote said, “The brief was to create something that had that movement and energy, and that had synergy with the gymnastics work of art.”
“It almost looks as though it’s flown over and landed in the garden bed, it’s this interesting sculpture that brings people over.”
As for the pieces’ construction, Mr Portelli said, “I enjoy the process, it’s very therapeutic … watching it come together is very satisfying.”
“Hopefully people appreciate it as much as I did making it.”
