The Libraries Act 1982, works to maintain the integrity and diversity of library services across South Australia to adequately make available the widest variety of ideas and knowledge. All Public Libraries are legislatively required to operate under this Act. This is further guided by the State Library South Australia Intellectual Freedom Policy, listing objectives that ensure equitable access and freedom of expression within library collections, including:
- overcoming the impacts of remoteness, disability, poverty and other forms of disadvantage
- developing inclusive library services, which effectively address diverse needs, affirm and strengthen individual identities, and foster tolerance and appreciation of difference
- providing welcoming places for everyone, free access to a wide range of information and opportunities for the free expression of ideas and exposure to different perspectives
- amplifying First Nations’ perspectives, stories and cultures to enable truth-telling.
Libraries must:
- Function as an unbiased source of information and ideas, including online content.
- Accept responsibility for providing free access to materials and information presenting, as far as possible, all points of view on contemporary and historical issues, including controversial issues. These items should not be excluded on moral, political, racial, religious, sexist, language, or other grounds.
- Libraries are mandated by law to exclude materials that are subject to federal and state restriction or prohibition.
